Falling for Him

Sabrina

After going to the movies, Steven and I are sitting on the hood of his car in the middle of the woods on a cliff that overlooks the city of Casselberry.

“It is nice and peaceful up here,” I say, totally relaxed and in my element.

“Yeah, it is,” Steven agrees. “My mom used to bring Candice and me up here during the summer when we were little. The three of us would always have picnics.”

“How cute!” I laugh at the thought of a womanizer reminiscing about having picnics with his mother. “You remember that.”

“I remember a lot of things, like how you used to look when you were little.”

“How did I look?”

“Cute. Skinny. You’re still skinny. I had the biggest crush on you. Back then, when we were kids, it was not cool to like girls the way that I liked you. I was afraid to say anything to you.”

“I remember how you used to pull my hair.”

“That is only because I liked you. I still do.”

“When we got to junior high school, you had too many females who had crushes on you to even notice me.”

“Mostly girls approached me first back then, and even now. I knew you definitely weren’t going to do that, so I didn’t say anything to you about the way I felt about you. I also thought you were too good for me. You always had a boyfriend anyway.”

“Luke.”

“Delvin is happy that Sha and Anthony broke up, because he loves that girl to death.”

“Did someone break your heart or something?” I ask.

“No. Why do you ask?”

“I’ve been wondering why you dog females the way you do.”

“I haven’t found the right one yet. I think it’s—no, as a matter of fact, I know the one is you. But you will not give me the time of day.”

“How can you know who ‘the one’ is this early in life?”

“Trust me, I do.”

“Game.”

“Not at all.”

“So you had sex with Kenya?”

He doesn’t deny it. “Yeah.” He’s staring straight into my eyes.

“Now you do not want to have anything to do with her.”

“She got what she wanted. She approached me first. I don’t have anything else to do with her, because I don’t care for easy females. They don’t care about me. They only want me for the popularity because I look good.”

I roll my eyes. “You’re so cocky!”

“I’m not oblivious to the truth. They don’t want to get to know me and find out what interests me. They are not concerned about how I feel about certain political and everyday-life issues. They want what is in my pants and to be able to say they’ve been with me. Some even think they’re going to get a relationship out of it, but I shut them down really quickly when they come at me with that crap. That’s why I give them what they want and leave them alone.”

“That makes you easy, too—just like them. You have to want it, too, in order to give it away.”

“Just because I’m easy doesn’t mean I want to be with someone the same way or that I cannot change for the right girl.
